SINCE 1975 · BUILDING FOR SUMMIT COUNTY SINCE THE GOLD RUSH FADED

244 Victorian buildings, and not one of them was built for a modern sectional.

Region · Summit County
State · Colorado
Since · 1975
Breckenridge started as a gold-rush town in 1859, and the National Register still lists 244 contributing structures along Main Street. False-front Victorian storefronts and miner's cottages that give the town more historic weight than anywhere else in Summit County.

That history sits right next to Shock Hill's gondola-in/out estates and the timber-and-stone mountain-contemporary builds on the town's sunnier east side, where afternoon light has always made lots more desirable.

Breckenridge is busier than its neighbors. More day visitors from the Front Range, more commercial energy, four connected ski peaks pulling people through the historic core rather than around it. That's a different problem for furniture than quieter Summit County towns like Silverthorne. A piece here has to survive both a full-time household and the visiting in-laws twice a winter.

Why Breckenridge's Victorian core resists retail furniture.

The historic district's miner's cottages have door and stair openings scaled for the 1880s, which means a lot of modern sectional sofas simply can't get inside without disassembly. Something retail delivery crews aren't set up to handle. Shock Hill and the Timber Trail ski-in/ski-out estates run the opposite direction, with room scale built for $10M-plus homes that dwarf anything off a showroom floor. We've delivered into both kinds of Breckenridge buildings, which mostly means we ask about the stairwell before we ask about the fabric.

Breckenridge in numbers.

The Breckenridge August Fine Art Festival takes over Main Street Station most years with more than two decades behind it now, and there's a particular late-summer light on the Tenmile Range that makes the whole town look like it's posing for a postcard. If your Shock Hill place hasn't had its main room finished since the last remodel, ski season is the deadline that matters. (818) 264-6340.
