That preservation instinct says something true about the town: Boulder wealth is CEO and tech-founder money that generally doesn't want to look like money. You'll find more architecturally serious houses in Newlands or Chautauqua than ostentatious ones, and the whole place still orbits around CU Boulder and the open-space trail system more than it does any retail district.
Up in the foothills, Pine Brook Hills runs a different game entirely. Mountain-modern homes cut into the hillside with views back over the Flatirons, built for people who wanted the quiet more than the address. A Victorian in Mapleton Hill and a glass-walled contemporary in Pine Brook Hills have nothing in common structurally, and most retail furniture is built to please neither.
Mapleton Hill's protected Victorians have period-correct room proportions. Narrower doorways, lower original ceiling heights on the second floor. That a lot of contemporary retail furniture simply doesn't clear. Pine Brook Hills homes tend to go the other direction, with big mountain-view walls of glass and open floor plans that make undersized furniture look like an afterthought against the Flatirons. Boulder's strong seasonal sun exposure, especially on south- and west-facing Pine Brook Hills lots, also puts real stress on fabric and leather that isn't specified for it. We build to the room in front of us, not a catalog dimension.

Boulder has serious independent furniture makers, not just national retailers on 29th Street. Here's who we point people toward.
The firms shaping how Boulder homes actually get built.
Worth putting on the calendar if you actually live here, not just visit.
The Colorado Music Festival runs all summer at Chautauqua, and there's a particular kind of Boulder evening. Cool air coming down off the Flatirons, a blanket on the lawn, somebody's dog behaving better than the kids. That makes it obvious why nobody here wants to leave. If your Mapleton Hill living room has been half-furnished since the last remodel, give us a call before the season fills up. (818) 264-6340.
